How to Deliver a Great Best Man’s Speech
When it comes to the wedding day, as the best man you have a lot of stress on your plate. You have to keep the rings safe, ensure the groom is ok, help organize and run the wedding and generally make sure things go smoothly so the bride and groom have a great day. This is before you start drinking and whilst you may have a hang over from the stag night the night before.
Then you have to stand up and give your speech.
With all the stress and rushing around you have to be witty, charming, amusing and move the audience emotionally. It’s a tall order isn’t it? Delivering a great best mans speech isn’t the easiest of things.
Unless you are a professional speaker or very used to giving speeches, you may struggle with your speech, so how do you give a great best mans speech?
Firstly, you need to prepare. Make sure you have your speech both well prepared and well rehearsed.
Don’t try and write it out verbatim as you will struggle to remember it all in the right order. It is much easier for you to write out the main points you want as bullet points and then talk around them.
Practise each bullet point until you are confident and sure of what you are saying. You can do this in the car or on the train as you commute to work.
Once you’ve got each bullet point rehearsed and ready then put them all together and run the speech through. Ideally here you want to get yourself a small audience of people not related to the wedding so they can give you some feedback on the delivery and content.
Take your notes with you to the wedding so that you know the main points you are covering and put them on the table in front of you so you are not holding pieces of paper in your hand.
When you speak, speak in a strong confident voice, but don’t shout. Look around the room and pause at each table, meeting the eyes of someone on the table so they think you are talking to them.
Try to avoid excessive alcohol before your speech because once you have had a few drinks you will find it harder to remember and deliver your speech. After your speech – have as many as you want, but a little moderation before hand will ensure you deliver a speech to remember for all the right reasons.
Just follow these tips and you will be able to deliver a great best mans speech that will be remembered for a long time and gain you plenty of favor in the eyes of the bride and groom.
